Gaillac, one of the oldest vineyards in France

Abbaye Saint-Michel The town of Gaillac was founded in 972.

From that time onwards, the vineyard expanded, with the founding of Saint-Michel Abbey. Thanks to the spirit of the religious orders, the accumulation of ressources and judicious and patient selections of grape varieties, the monks obtained fine wines destined to kings, Lords, and to be used for Eucharistic Sacrifices.

  • In 1221, the " Consuls " published the harvest bans, proof of the research and the good standard of the wines.
  • In 1253, Henri III, king of England, ordered 20 barrels of Gaillac wines. Three centuries later, Henri IV perpertuated the tradition.
  • Then, naturally, the selling of Gaillac wines went west, using the main communication route, the River Tarn.
